We give our does their booster shots and worm them the month before we plan on breeding, then again 2 weeks before their due date. We have found that this schedule not only helps to provide quality colostrum to our kids but our does clean better after kidding. We have had very few problems on this schedule, our does settle and maintain healthy pregnancies, and deliver strong healthy kids that are born on strong legs and a desire to nurse. We use Pour-On wormers for all of our does and usually use Eprinex pour on for cattle or Cydectin pour on for cattle 2 weeks before their due date, this aides in having our kids born in a worm free or at least as free as we can make it environment. We also give all does 3cc of Bo-Se and 2cc of CDT 2 weeks before their due dates, we have tested and proven in the herd and other herds that this schedule makes the strongest kids as well as the deepest golden colored colostrum for our kids. It is really basic biology, it takes one week for antibodies to build up and the second week they should be at their highest levels before dropping to a maintenance level. I have worked with one of our local veterinarians and he did not believe until he saw the changes in a flock of sheep as well as a herd of goats he had switch over to this schedule. He now advises his breeders to adopt a simular routine to aid in having stronger lambs and kids hit the ground. Giving our does their shots 2 weeks before kidding has enabled us to not have to give shots to our kids until they are disbudded. I know of several breeders who still give their kids shots the day they are born, our personal belief is that being born is hard enough without getting stuck with needles as well. |
